 Job searching a full time job is a soulless endeavor, which tricks you with hope from its qualifications section where hope quickly fades away once you've read: Fluency in another language, different education major, and/or submit a cover letter. 

All of which is not helped by parents with unsolicited advice that range from helpful to demeaning.

My (un)favorite is the oft-repeated "just leave your resume with HR!" which I think is not as simple as just that, and knowing that while still hearing it is just still somehow more.... frustrating.

You could tell them this little tidbit

A lot of places have instructions that will say "ONLY apply online" or "Only apply with X method" if you drop your resume off to HR when expressly told to use another method you are very likely to be put on a do not hire list. Not following instructions is one of the methods that employers use to throw out resumes these days.
