Tonight, I just experienced my first cool event of 2009. Inauguration didn't really count since I slept in when that happened on the news, so I only experienced the after-party effect of the historic event (*secretly bash head on wall*)
But I finally participated in the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
On Wednesday, my awesome Italian film studies teacher handed out free tickets to go see an interview with David Fincher tonight at 8:00, and I got an extra with a guy friend 'cuz I know that we have the same interests and reactions to these kinds of things. Now David Fincher is the director of very cool, cult-like movies.
First off is Alien 3 (to his utter embarassment). Then various music videos which included the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Paula Abdul (of which he groaned to the montage of his various music vids and commercials).
Then Se7en. Then Fight Club. Then The Game. Then Panic Room. Then Zodiac...
And finally The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Needless to say, I've just added him to my All-Time Favorite Directors list.
Along for the ride was one of the supporting actresses in Benjamin Button (don't remember name, but she played Ben's surrogate mom), who was awesome, and for one whole minute. Jake Gyllenhaul.
When he walked out onstage, everyone in the Arlington Theater whipped out their cameras and started zooming in and taking pictures of him. It was really hilarious. It was like being in a rave! I think most people wanted to see Jake in the first place, but he only showed up to give a short speech on the magnificence of David Fincher, so it's like the side-show attraction for the big ride on Coney Island was like a nickelodeon moment: you gotta add another nickel for a short peepshow.
That made no sense whatsoever.
Great experience. First real celebrity meeting. I'm on the stairway to the industry!
(Also, on that Wednesday day in Film 101, the whole class got to meet Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite. He's all buff and nice-guy gangsta-ish! It's kind of funny).
