zen_monkHad a nice and relaxing 4th of July a couple days ago. Didn't really go out until much later to the bars before last call, but from the kitchen window in the apartment I'm staying in, there was a nice view of fireworks blooming out. Granted, they were probably unofficial fireworks since the city hadn't planned any at the beach, but at least for some people it seemed to work out nicely for some folks.
I start work tomorrow morning for the first time at the candy store by the boardwalk. Just four hour shifts, but gradually working up towards 8 hours, i think, since that's the regular schedule. What I'm hoping is to get acclimated fast enough so I get some full time hours to save up for my next move at the end of the lease in August. This would be my first time trying to actually sign on a lease or a contract with housing without my parents signing on for it, but I guess I underestimated how transient college kids can be what with all the advertisements on getting people to sign on their leases or needing one.
Thinking a lot about the future, and I'm split between staying in this city for an extended amount of time (either one or two years) or finding the next opportunity in another city where I might have the chance to advance. Qualifications for a lot of entry-level work looks daunting, and sometimes I felt that I'm already too old to take a chance on things, especially on unpaid experience (and for that matter, out-of-country unpaid experience). Splitting off a lot of time between wanting to go to China to stay with my grandfather, who's my only living grandparent now amongst many grand aunties and uncles, or going to the Middle East to expand on my interests there, or just finding work and experience in the states where I would just do enough to get into grad school.
I should've just gone to UC Riverside or UC Merced right out of college and just transfer between campuses until I'm happy.
