First Rock Concert

zen_monkOctober 8th was the first time I've been to the Santa Barbara Bowl as well as my first rock concert.
I saw the Jason Mraz concert that was part of the fall season at the Bowl, and I felt that considering that it was a singer whom I've always admired for his lyrics and melody that it would be a good time to go to a rock concert like possibly every other teenager in America. So I suppose my youth is fulfilled, right after being in the Homecoming court and getting my learner's permit.
Admittedly, I've never really heard too much of Jason Mraz's work aside from the popular ones from the radio, but I do own a couple of his older albums so the concert last night was a good opportunity to expand my exposure to him. So I can't really say definitively what songs he sang because he doesn't introduce the song titles before singing, which did give a fluid performance.
The Bowl is, in short, like being in a grand theater with no walls. I supposed that when I thought of an open-aired rock concert, I had envisioned wide pastures or something, but I had to reconcile with the reality that it must conform to the smallness of Santa Barbara despite it's prominent reputation.
I really like Jason Mraz as a performer. He's a terrific singer and it's only to be witnessed can I really comprehend the fantastic ranges of pitches that he can achieve. I also thought that he was very witty and that he can pull just any quip out of nowhere. He also has a very easygoing personality that doesn't show a hint of awkwardness and instead brought the air of a self-assured man with no worries. That, and he might be high. I suppose that in this way that it's of no surprise that he is very sensual and brought that kind of enviable sexiness on the stage that night. Also, October 8th was apparently John Lennon's birthday and it was only when Jason was singing "All you need is love" did I remember that that night was Larry King's interview with Ringo and Paul when I had that "Aha!" moment when I realized that October 8th must have been a concert date that Jason Mraz picked for significance.
All in all, I was very pleased with that night. I heard some great music, got a couple of nice t-shirts and a cd, and the bathrooms were well-kept. I think the fact that I was considerably far from the stage, like so far that I can only make out what he wore distinctly but not his face so I guess that was a little dehumanizing, that I couldn't really get into the hype of Jason Mraz because it really is only in a crowd of crazies can I really let loose and participate in the hullabaloo. The only bad thing to come out of it was that I got a sore throat which persisted to even now. It didn't happened because I was there in the open air and that it was cold, but I started having that itch right when I left the house. Oh well.
