It was supposed to be a part of the "Fabula Nova Crystallis" arc, the New Tale of the Crystal, supposed to define the PS3 genre and make Final Fantasy as a franchise ready for all the new awesome stuff like seemless gameplay and cutscene stuff. Interactive movie aesthetic thing. "Look like Advent Children" even though that's an actual movie and so it's like... we can't really make it super interactive anyway, that's a different plateau of media consumption. (And that's my vague thoughts on that).
Like, if Versus XIII got released in that expected timely manner, presumably after FFXIII and then have Type-O on the PSP (former XIII Agito), then we'd finish that whole story; the arc that SE promised. Then we could move on with the Playstation 4 with a totally new idea and probably make another kind of themed arc that would define that generation. But instead Versus XIII is rebranded as XV and so it's like... the PS4 is piggy-backing off from the past, sorta? Even though we only had the trailer of Versus XIII to content with ourselves, it's an idea that's long been stewing. We could've went to a different food course. Like pudding or after dinner schnapps (crap, now I"m hungry).
Well, here's to a good, meaty stew that's hopefully hearty and not made from dry milkbones.
(Hey don't get me wrong, I thought the Lightning Saga is cool, if having the aesthetics kinda inconsistent [I was perfectly happy with XIII-2's art director])
On another note, why didn't we get Type-O on the Vita? My VEETA LANGUISHES. (nah not really; FFX/X-2, MY BATTERIES ARE READY)
