The Kung Fu tropes of FF
Oct. 29th, 2013 01:31 amOff the top of my head:
Yang- resident mentor and leader of clan of monk/ascetics but eventually considered to be almost too strict and old-fashioned in his ways (as per the After Years). Also has the "simple-minded" type of fighter where being stubborn leads to easy foolishness. Is a master, but might become outdated until some later episode shows that traditionalism has some value in the face of progress.
Josef- not quite sure on this one yet, since I haven't finished Final Fantasy II and so far he just has loyalty to his workers and a nifty snow-boat/sled. Industrious AND brotherhood towards others!
Sabin- good-hearted, heart-on-sleeve, honest and easily accepting of himself. Best student because he has empathy, with the focus to back up his skill set. Clever enough, even if somewhat boorish in other aspects. Sociable aspect and filial piety leads to him being more emotionally intelligent and aware about himself. Civilized trappings not his path to go because he feels trapped in decorum which may or may not be somewhat more like materialization compared to his spirituality. Gonna be a master~
Tifa- utilitarian fighter who gives it her all. Might not grasp all the spiritual aspect of the craft, but knows enough about it to value as a method to defend others and for herself. Duodecim gives more embellishment into it, showing her being able to manifest her chakra and feinting in her skill set; and a more tactical (as in HARD to PLAY but I ENDURE) way of fighting. Displays piety towards her master, but ultimately shows loyalty to her friends and family because that is the clearest desire in her life. A+ student.
Zell- a go-get-'em pupil who's got the jive but maybe not the finesse. Most likely to take the hardest path to rising up as an excellent fighter. Youth gets in the way of more focused training, but surprisingly is a diligent student and goes by the book. Gonna be on the path to being Sabin but first he feeds his lizard brain/ can't let go of attachments to worldly pleasures. Like bread and hot dogs. Also provides moments of clarity even when swept up in the moment. Skillful punk.
Amarant- Cocky and power-hungry kung fu rival. Once meets his match, gets frustrated over why his methods don't work, decides to work with his conqueror in order to learn from him but is narrow-minded. Asceticism to the extreme. Not entirely callous, but is easily misunderstood because of stoic and controlled nature. Is a beast in battle. Eventually searches for atonement in behavior and probably becomes a Buddhist. Possible allusion to one of Monkey King's enemies.
Snow- I'M GONNA BE A HERO. *many failures later...* STILL CHUGGING. Tries to accept all consequences but at same time barrels through all of them. Monk-in-training. He's got the spirit, though.
Man, when's the next "Sleeping Dogs" video game coming out?
